What Do You Need To Know About Synthetic Nicotine?

With recent regulations regarding e-cigs being based around what precisely is legally meant by “tobacco product”, more people have been questioning what this means with regard to e-juice. While the natural nicotine made from real tobacco used to make e-liquid means that it is defined as a “tobacco product”, this has led to companies wondering whether or not it could be possible to get an e-juice product approved by the FDA simply by using nicotine that is created synthetically instead of being naturally derived. With this prospect being touted by experts, what exactly do we need to know about synthetic nicotine?

What Exactly Is Synthetic Nicotine?

Nicotine is compound which is made up of 10 atoms of carbon, 14 atoms of hydrogen and 2 atoms of nitrogen. However, should a nicotine molecule be extracted from a natural tobacco plant and combined with a molecule which had been derived from another source, the result would be an fundamentally identical structure. Therefore, there is very little distinction between synthetic and natural nicotine.

Synthetic nicotine is a term which is used when this chemical is made from a non-natural source i.e.  using sulphuric acid, ethanol, niacin or another chemical. However nicotine is known as a chiral molecule and this means that it exists in 2 forms which are unable to be superimposed over each other, with R nicotine being a mirror image of S nicotine.

When making synthetic nicotine, the biggest problem is that S nicotine is the only type which is wanted by vapers, and therefore, while creating a mix of both types of the chemical is relatively simple, it would need to be purified further in order to generate a sample of S type nicotine which would be usable.

Is Synthetic Nicotine Being Manufactured?

The interesting news is that, even though synthetic nicotine isn’t easy to produce, some companies are working on making it right now. Next Generation Labs is one such manufacturer who has created a 99.5% pure nicotine solution that is derived from a non-tobacco source and whose product is being used currently by a number of e-liquid brands.

While this company has been refining their process over a number of years to enable synthetic nicotine to be produced on a large scale, their product is still considerably more costly than naturally derived nicotine, although its price is starting to come down.

Are There Any Benefits To Synthetic Nicotine?

tfn-nicotineApart from the benefits which may exist surrounding regulation, one of the greatest advantages to using synthetic nicotine has to relate to its purity. When tobacco is derived from a natural source, some impurities from tobacco will always be found in the mix. Although these are in small amounts, they are still there, and in larger quantities, these impurities could not only be dangerous, but also affect the flavour of the e-juice.

However, when nicotine is derived from a synthetic source, no impurities from tobacco are found in the mix and therefore the flavour is cleaner and this means that there is no need to use a large amount of flavourings to improve the taste of the e-juice. Even better, as there are no impurities, synthetic nicotine eliminates the possibility of any risk which could be posed by tobacco specific nitrosamines.

So What Can I Take From This?

Although the idea of having synthetic nicotine in our e-liquid is a good idea, it doesn’t necessarily mean that today’s burdensome regulations can be avoided. Nevertheless, if you prefer the idea of an e-liquid which has no impurities derived from tobacco and with a much cleaner taste, you can already find it on the market, although you will need to pay more for a synthetically derived product. Still, although many vapers hope that synthetic nicotine is the way of the future, as yet, it isn’t likely to become a reality any time soon. Homepage
